So on many sites I went to, including the link you provided, the story of Beauty and the Beast is incorrectly attributed to Madame de Villeneuve. De Villeneuve wrote the original novel of BatB in 1740, However the story you linked to was the abridged children’s version written by Jeanne-Marie LePrince de Beaumont adapted from de Villeneuve’s novel. So I wondered why the omission, until I looked de Beaumont up on Wikipedia and discovered that, for years, she was the lover of none other than Thomas Pichon, aka Thomas Tyrell, aka “The Judas of Acadia”, who famously betrayed the Acadian/Mi’kmaq/French alliance to the British during Father Le Loutre’s War, which led to the fall of Beausejour and the beginning of the British offensive in Nova Scotia during the Seven Years’ War that led to the fall of the French Empire in North America. This of course led to the great Acadian diaspora and the Cajun culture of Louisiana. So are the Canadians still holding a grudge, pretending that Mlle. de Beaumont never existed and Mme. de Villeneuve wrote both versions, or am I just grasping at straws?
I am grasping at straws but wow, I love the internet.
I have no idea but feel free to update us if you get to a conclusion. 🙂
